Whether you’re going back to work, thinking about dating again, or simply trying to feel like yourself after a difficult chapter, what you wear can play a powerful role in rebuilding your confidence.

After more than 30 years in the fashion industry—working with everyone from everyday clients to celebrities like Elizabeth Hurley, Paul McCartney, and Rod Stewart—I’ve seen firsthand how the right style can completely transform how someone feels.

And after divorce, that transformation can be especially meaningful.

When someone is going through heartbreak or major life change, style often feels like the least important thing in the world. That’s completely understandable. But once you begin to move forward—even a little—your appearance can give you the boost you need to feel like yourself again.

One of the most transformative things we do together is a wardrobe detox. Many people hold onto clothes for years—even decades—without realizing how much negative space those items take up.

I recently worked with a client who still had pieces from the 1990s that didn’t fit her life or body anymore. She wasn’t even wearing them—but they were still occupying space in her closet.

The right colors can brighten your complexion, enhance your eyes, and instantly make you look more vibrant. It’s one of the quickest ways to elevate your appearance.

2. Pay Attention to Shoes

Shoes can completely transform an outfit. You might be wearing jeans, but switching from sneakers to a block heel, a stylish boot, or a polished flat immediately elevates the entire look.

3. Make an Effort—But Not Too Much

The ideal look for a date is effortless confidence. You want to appear polished and thoughtful, but not overly styled. It should look like this is simply who you are.

What About Style in Your 50s?

For example, while some people may disagree with me, I generally advise clients in their 50s and beyond to skip very short skirts for dates and opt for silhouettes that feel sophisticated and flattering.

Many people returning to work after divorce assume they need to revive the old corporate wardrobe from years ago. But work style has changed dramatically. Post-pandemic workplaces are far more relaxed. Instead of rigid suits and pencil skirts, a modern work wardrobe might include:
