AZ on the Rocks: “This is an indoor rock climbing gym that offers climbing on ropes as well as bouldering (without ropes). The facility offers a great climbing experience without the challenges and safety concerns of climbing outside. It is also easy to access, located right off the 101 and Bell Road.” – Jenn of AZ Women’s Climbing Coalition
Butterfly Wonderland: “The Butterfly Wonderland in Scottsdale is an indoor conservatory, or rainforest habitat that features thousands of butterflies from across the globe. It’s a real chance to get up close and personal with nature, learn about different butterfly species and where they come from. Although butterflies are their main attraction, you can also find reptiles, amphibians, beetles and other insect exhibits to check out. It’s a must-do for curious explorers of all ages!” – Jason Anderson, Chief Operating Officer of HÓZHÓ Scottsdale.
Scottsdale Arabian Horse Show: “The Scottsdale Arabian Horse is a yearly event in Scottsdale that attracts horse lovers from around the world. Breeders, trainers and spectators alike gather to celebrate the beauty of Arabian horses. As one of the largest shows of its kind worldwide, you can expect to see world-class competitions, breeding showcases and of course endless shopping. A great addition to a vacation itinerary.” – Jason Anderson, Chief Operating Officer of HÓZHÓ Scottsdale.
Gecko Climbing Gym: “Located in north Phoenix and conveniently accessed from the 101 or I-17 freeways, we offer an active escape from the summer heat with roped climbing, bouldering, fitness, and yoga. A great spot for individuals, couples, and families, our gym would love to introduce you to the joy of climbing or give you a place to hone your skills. Day passes and punch cards are available, and shoe and harness rentals are available, too!” – Michelle Love of Gecko Climbing Gym.
Fetching Dog: “Swing by Fetching Dog for treats and goodies with your pup or plan a date with a human friend and attend one of our monthly painting classes where you are guided by a professional artist and leave with a super fun portrait of your own pet. No talent required: This is fun art, not fine art and is only $45 with all supplies provided.” – Becci Scott of Fetching Dog
Arizona Outdoor Fun ATV and UTV Tours: “We believe Scottsdale’s allure lies in its rugged desert landscapes. Our ATV and UTV off-road tours offer an unparalleled opportunity to immerse oneself in the natural beauty of the Sonoran Desert. As guests traverse our winding trails, they’re treated to panoramic views of the breathtaking Bradshaw Mountains and towering Saguaro cacti. It’s an exhilarating experience that captures the essence of the Sonoran Desert.” – Chas Metz of Arizona Outdoor Fun.
Walk Around Old Town Scottsdale: “Explore the vibrant art scene, unique boutiques, and delicious dining options. Don’t miss the Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art for some creative inspiration. Whether you’re looking for a stylish souvenir or a gourmet meal, Old Town has it all.” – Scottsdale Bride Tribe.
Step two:
Dine on the local food
If you’re thinking about renting a house in Scottsdale, you should learn all you can about the food first. Though it’s not as widely regarded as the foodie scene in Tucson, Scottsdale boasts a multitude of restaurants that are sure to satiate your appetite.
Try a recommendation from local, acclaimed Chef Cory Oppold: “A few of my favorite places to enjoy when I’m not in the kitchen at COURSE restaurant are Hush Public House, Andreoli Italian Grocer and Chula Seafood. Scottsdale was the only location I could foresee building COURSE, and I am grateful to live in this incredible city!” – Chef Cory Oppold of COURSE.
Taza Bistro Mediterranean Fusion: “This place is a cozy restaurant and full bar owned by a husband and wife team who make every dish from scratch to order. The menu is very unique with such specialties as the cyprus salmon, poached in white wine and garlic then seared with olive oil for a tender flavorful finish. There are lots of appetizer options, salads and the menu is very gluten-free friendly. They also cater and offer their full-service restaurant as an all-inclusive private events venue.” -Sandra Lockard of Taza Bistro.
Malee’s Thai Bistro: “You have to try Malee’s Thai Bistro. If you go, try the crispy basil chicken, you will be glad you did.” – Alison Chandler and Marsha Vallee, owners of Noble Beast Natural Market for Pets.
Macayo’s Mexican Restaurant: “I’d recommend a stop at the authentic Macayo’s Mexican Restaurant here in Pima Crossing Shopping Plaza where dogs are welcome to join their humans on the patio.” – Becci Scott of Fetching Dog.
Tapas Papa Frita: “It’s this awesome Spanish spot tucked away in a cozy spot of Oldtown near the water. The portions are meant to be shared, so you get to try a little bit of everything. It’s such a fun experience diving into a variety of tapas with friends or family. And let me tell you, the flavors are so good, you’ll want to keep coming back for more! Plus, the surrounding area is perfect for a leisurely stroll before or after your meal. It’s got that quaint, charming vibe that just adds to the whole experience. On certain nights they even have live music and tap dancing performances! It adds a whole new level of fun to the whole dining experience.” – Anthony Echavaria of Pasta Now.
FnB Restaurant: “Looking for some good eats following a morning hike and midday climbing gym session? Get cleaned up from your adventure and check out FnB, an award-winning spot in Old Town Scottsdale featuring an incredible Arizona wine selection and creative cuisine by James Beard winner Charleen Badman. Their food and beverage will blow your mind and refuel your body, and their convenient location in walkable Old Town will give you a base for exploring more of the urban area.” – Michelle Love of Gecko Climbing Gym.
Try some of Scottsdale’s Kosher restaurants: “One is called ‘Kitchen 18’ – located two doors down from Chabad of Scottsdale. It offers a large mixed menu. The other one is also on Scottsdale and Shea, called ‘Fata Morgana’, also a fantastic Middle Eastern-flavored restaurant. Both are supervised Kosher by Rabbi Yossi Levertov, of Chabad of Scottsdale.” – Chabad of Scottsdale
Step three:
Get yourself a sweet treat
Although Scottsdale’s weather can be beautiful, it can also be brutal in the summer months. Luckily, the cure for the heat is simple – ice cream. Well, ice cream and staying inside to cool off. Pick a place from below to keep you cool during your one day in Scottsdale.
Dessert in Desert: “A unique soft serve ice cream experience. The owner and staff are very friendly. They offer a cultural experience for such a sweet and simple dessert. Soft serve ice cream in a fish cone (cone shaped like a fish). Absolutely delicious and you can customize everything. They have a photo booth so you can take home your memory.” – Katie McKenna of AZ on the Rocks
The Sugar Bowl: “The Sugar Bowl is the best place to go back in time for an ice cream treat or old school lunch.” – Alison Chandler and Marsha Vallee, owners of Noble Beast Natural Market for Pets.
Step four:
Play around in Scottsdale’s outdoor paradise
Scottsdale is a nature lover’s dream. With plenty of hiking trails and vibrant flora and fauna, there’s always somewhere new to explore or something new to see. Check below for some of the best outdoor experiences in Scottsdale.
Tempe Town Lake: “Visit Tempe Town Lake to walk around and explore!” – Scottsdale Event Photography.
Mountain View Park: “A 30-acre local neighborhood park with paved paths for hiking and biking that loops around. Access to nearby trails with mountain views all around. It boasts a basketball court, tennis courts, sand volleyball court and a kids playground. The community center has kid-friendly activities and a summer camp schedule.” -Sandra Lockard of Taza Bistro.
McDowell Sonoran Preserve: “So many beautiful, well-maintained, and easily accessible trails. They are just far enough away from the city to make you feel like you’ve escaped the chaos. Plenty of trails for different types of activities: bird watching, flora/fauna, hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, gravel biking, etc. No permits needed. Gateway is perfect for a walk or a moderate hiking loop. Tom’s Thumb is a challenging hike but offers exceptional views and plenty of great rest stops. Check out Alltrails, MTB Project, MTN Project, or Trailforks to get more information on all the trails readily available.” – Katie McKenna of AZ on the Rocks
Desert Botanical Garden: “Discover the diverse and beautiful desert flora at the Desert Botanical Garden. With over 50,000 plant displays, including many rare and endangered species, it’s a must-visit for nature lovers.” – Scottsdale Bride Tribe
Hike Camelback or Papago: “Scottsdale has some incredible hiking, and there are a couple of options depending on your skill level. If you’re up for a challenge, Camelback Mountain is the way to go. It’s a steep hike, but the views from the top are totally worth it. Now, if you’re looking for something a bit more laid-back, Papago Park is great. It’s got smaller hikes that are perfect for beginners or anyone just looking for a casual stroll. Both of these spots really showcase the beauty of Arizona – stunning rock formations, towering cacti, the whole nine yards. So whether you’re a seasoned hiker or just looking for a little outdoor adventure, Scottsdale’s got you covered!” – Anthony Echavaria of Pasta Now.
Del Camino Park: “This park seriously has everything you could want – basketball courts, skateboarding, disk golf, and amazing bike trails. The best part is that it feels like it goes on forever. We love to get tacos at our local carniceria and eat them on the park benches.” – Anthony Echavaria of Pasta Now.
Pinnacle Peak: “Visit this Phoenix area iconic formation, and if you’re a rock climber, bring your sport or trad gear and enjoy the rock in the early morning. The park is managed by the City of Scottsdale and in addition to being a classic climbing area in the valley, it offers a 2-mile (each way) hike to some fantastic views of the surrounding mountains and the city.” – Michelle Love of Gecko Climbing Gym
Visit Bartlett Lake and Lake Pleasant: “My two recommendations would be visiting Bartlett Lake and Lake Pleasant. It’s good to go to water during our Arizona summer. These lakes are close (30-60 minutes), beautiful, and boats to rent if someone does not have a boat. Lake Pleasant has two nice restaurants on the lake.” – Ray Hughes of Scottsdale Martial Arts Center.
Step five:
Enjoy a drink
Whether you’re into craft beers or craft cocktails, Scottsdale has both. To make this choice a little easier, you only have to choose between two locations despite the multitudes of options in Scottsdale.
AZ/88: “As a Scottsdale landmark since 1988, if you haven’t already been, you need to check it out! I love grabbing drinks at AZ/88 because it feels so cosmopolitan and makes for great people-watching! With revolving art displays, DJ-spun tunes, and filled-to-the-rim martinis, you can’t go wrong meeting friends at AZ/88!” – Kevin Owens of Fine AZ Living.
OHSO Brewery: “Locally owned brewery with multiple locations across the valley. Their staff is always friendly and down to earth. Each location is near a bike path so you can make it a stop along your ride. They have a great brunch option on Saturday and Sunday offering a free beer or mimosa with an entree. Their food, spirits, and beer are all delicious. Dog-friendly patio so you can pet all the cute dogs while you enjoy a memorable meal.” – Katie McKenna of AZ on the Rocks.
Step six:
Make it an overnight
If you still need to find overnight accommodations and you’re not ready yet to rent a house in Scottsdale, you’re in luck. You can’t go wrong with Hotel Valley Ho or HÓZHÓ; both are beautiful accommodations that will elevate your trip to the next level.
Hotel Valley Ho: “If you are looking for a spot to lounge poolside during a warm summer day, spend your afternoon under the palms of this mid-century modern hideaway just minutes from Old Town! Hotel Valley Ho sells day passes and rents cabanas (which are perfect for a group of 8-15 friends) to enjoy their OH Pool with snacks, refreshing cocktails, and resident DJs! I love their seasonal “Pool Punch Pouch” cocktails that are essentially cocktail pouches you drink while in the pool!” – Kevin Owens of Fine AZ Living.
